Ann Schmaltz Obituary

Ann Marie Schmaltz, 61, of Canon City, passed away at her home on Saturday June 17, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. She was born September 22, 1955 in Billings, Montana to Sylvester P. and Alta Mae (Ward) Schmaltz. Ann Marie grew up in Williston, North Dakota and Coon Rapids, Minnesota and graduated from Coon Rapids High School. She married Marvin Spencer in 1986 in San Rafael, California. Ann Marie lived in Canon City for the past 14 years and previously in the San Rafael and Novato, California area before retiring in 1999 and traveling by RV for several years in the U.S. and Canada. A summer spent in Alaska and Northern Canada was the highlight of those years and extended visits with family and friends throughout the country was an equally enjoyable part of being able to live wherever the RV was parked. Ann Marie became an accomplished jewelry maker during retirement and in recent years was learning to paint. She was a volunteer with the St. Thomas More Gift Shop and the Volunteers for Income Tax Assistance. Ann Marie is survived by her husband, Marvin Spencer; stepdaughters, Kathryn (Jesse) Coleman, of Aztec, New Mexico and Kristine (Jason) Raggio, of Warsaw, Poland; granddaughter, Mary Coleman, of Notre Dame, Indiana; mother, Alta Mae Schmaltz, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; sister, Elizabeth Rand; brothers, Michael, Paul, John, Mark and Tony Schmaltz; numerous extended family and many friends in Canon City and elsewhere. The family wishes to thank Sangre de Cristo Hospice for their care and the many friends who offered their support and assistance during Ann Marie's illness. Visitation, 1:00 p.m. followed by Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017, Wilson Funeral Home in Canon City. Arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home. You're one of the few people I remember well, Ann.  So sorry to know that I won't be able to see you at our reunion. It sounds like you had a lovely, interesting life though. Congrats on that. Rest in Power, Ann Marie.

Ann and I were in a few art classes together our senior year and became quite close.  I drove to school, so I would always pick her up early before school and we would go the the Country Kitchen by the high school and have coffee before school started. We had some great conversations and a caffeine buzz before class!

RIP in dear lady.
