Randy Nelson, 51, died Monday, July 02, 2007 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN following a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Robert Dahlen officiating. Burial will follow at Telemarken Cemetery rural Goodridge, MN. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post 2793 and American Legion Post 117 of Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, July 4, 2007 with a 7:00 PM prayer service at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN.
Randolph John Nelson was born July 9, 1955 in Princeton, MN the son of Kenneth and Geraldine (Crisman) Nelson. He was baptized in August of 1955 at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, MN and confirmed in 1970 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fridley, MN. He attended school in Coon Rapids, MN and graduated in 1973 from Coon Rapids Senior High School.
He entered into service with United States Navy on March 30, 1973. He served aboard the USS Mobile and USS Hancock and was in the South China Sea during the end of the Vietnam War. He sang in the Navy Choir. Randy was Honorably Discharged on January 8, 1977.
On January 17, 1977, Randy was united in marriage to Dee Briggs in San Diego, CA. To this union two children were born, Richard and Crystal. They lived in California, Connecticut, and eventually settled west of Thief River Falls, MN. They divorced in 1981. Randy then moved to Minneapolis and went to work for Sir Speedy from 1984 until 1994. There he met Becky Kuske and the couple along with her two children Mandy and Marybeth, and his son, Richard, returned to the Goodridge, MN area. From 1994 until 2005, Randy worked for the Thief River Falls Times as a printer. On February 14, 2001 he married Ader Phelps in Goodridge, MN and the couple made their home on a farm in rural St. Hilaire. He later worked for Digi-Key and Jerry Hasnedl.
Randy enjoyed farming, fishing, bowling, golfing, and playing softball and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, Richard (Laura) Nelson of Holt, MN, and Crystal Nelson of Thief River Falls; 2 grandchildren, Parker and Victoria Nelson; parents, Kenneth and Geraldine Nelson of Oklee, MN; brother, Brian Nelson of Newfolden, MN; sisters, Karen Langseth of Grygla, MN and Brenda (Scott) Molstad of Thief River Falls, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by grandparents, Lavina and Bernard Crisman of Minneapolis, MN; Clarence and May Nelson of Thief River Falls, MN; Myrtle Drager of Reeder, ND; and several aunts and uncles.
